Artist Statement I am making art to communicate the restless journeying of life, how the body inevitably decays, and how we as humans are all intrinsically flawed and broken. I am continually amazed at the many products and procedures intended to keep the body looking and feeling younger. Through my artwork I am examining the notions and stigmas related to old age, this is evident in my piece Passage and Presence. The piece is a series of small busts whose bodies are in various states of decay. Particularly I am interested in the way that the mind may be decaying while the body remains intact. Or how a broken body may be hindering further development of an ever-aging mind. My artwork explores how our bodies are in a constant state of movement or change throughout life. I am interested in the permanent and ancient structures in the landscape contrasted with the fleeting movements of the people passing through. The structures, set pathways and speed limits that dictate our movement while driving on a highway echo the social structures and systems that are in place as we go about our lives. In my Piazza del Popalo series of drawings and paintings inspired by my trip to Rome I communicate this parallel by building up a layer of history with my mark making, showing both the passage of people and the passage of time. Alberto Giacometti informs my work because of the way he depicts the human body in a constant state of restless transit. In both his paintings and sculptures the figure is depicted as thin, weary, but always in motion, continually searching for what one will seemingly never find. The idea of searching also infuses my artwork in that we are constantly searching for a way to repair our own brokenness. My faith grounds me and breathes life into my work albeit every day is a struggle to find balance between all aspects of my life. In my artwork, I am exploring my own Christian faith and bringing together many ideas that have inspired me.. The writing of C.S. Lewis, most specifically his book “The Great Divorce,” inspires me. Lewis deals with a subject that resonates with my work: the relationship and separation that exists between heaven and hell. The great divide within our universe reflects the personal divide within each one of us..
